About 200 types of viruses have adapted themselves specifically for infecting our noses. These cold viruses have grown very adept at causing runny noses, sneezing, sore throats and coughing—in the average person about two to three times a year. Flu infections occur much less often, in contrast, typically giving rise to fever, fatigue, body aches and other severe symptoms. COVID-19 is another respiratory infection to consider since it can have similar symptoms to a cold or flu.
When you’re up against the common cold or other respiratory infections this winter, consider these popular treatment myths.
Myth: Feed a cold, starve a fever.
Fact: Being hungry or stuffed will not get rid of a cold or fever any faster. When you’re sick it’s best to enjoy tasty, nutritious food in moderation.
Myth: Chicken soup is worthless.
Fact: Studies show it really helps alleviate symptoms in several ways. Hot soup relieves congestion by increasing mucous flow. Substances in the soup also ease airway irritation and inflammation.
Myth: Having a hot toddy won’t hurt.
Fact: Hot alcoholic beverages tend to dilate blood vessels and worsen nasal congestion and headache. Instead, try tea with honey or lemon. Don’t use honey in infants under 12 months.
Myth: Antibiotics cure colds.
Fact: If you have a cold, a virus is to blame. Antibiotics can’t kill viruses. They’re only effective against bacterial infections. Taking antibiotics when they’re not needed is a common cause of bacterial resistance. In bacterial resistance, the bacteria then become resistant to antibiotics, which may not work when you truly need them.
